Godowsky - Java Suite

Dubbed the Buddha of the Piano, Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) was one of the foremost pianists of the early 20th century, along with figures such as Rachmaninoff and Busoni. A veritable world traveller, Godowsky wrote his Java Suite after being captivated by gamelan music on a concert tour to Java in the 1920s.

Wild - Seven Virtuoso Etudes

Seven classic American songs by Gershwin are transformed into dazzling displays of pianistic virtuosity. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Earl Wild (1915-2010) was a superlative pianist known for his transcriptions onto piano of both jazz and classical music.

Nketia - African Pianism

Joseph Hanson Kwabena Nketia (1921-2019) was a composer and ethnomusicologist from Ghana, considered "easily the most published and best known authority on African music and aesthetics in the world" during his lifetime. African Pianism is a set of twelve diverse short pieces inspired by music from several Ghanaian cultures.

Bartók - Romanian Folk Dances

A classic in the piano repertoire, this piece by celebrated Hungarian composer Béla Bartók (1881-1945) was originally titled Romanian Folk Dances from Hungary, but was changed by the composer just five years after its composition when Transylvania - the area from which the six folk tunes in the piece originate - became part of Romania.

Lysenko - Ukrainian Rhapsody #2

Composer of the hymn Prayer for Ukraine, Mykola Lysenko (1842-1912) was a central figure in Ukrainian music during the Ukrainian National Revival, having composed an array of songs, choral works, and operas in his native Ukrainian. His Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes No. 2 features two distinctly Ukrainian genres - the Dumka (a melancholic folk form) and the Shumka (an energetic dance).

Milhaud - Saudades do Brasil

Inspired by a trip to Brazil in 1917-18, French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) wrote this suite of 12 dances for piano; each movement bears the name of a neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, and each features prominent samba rhythms and Milhaud's characteristic polytonal style.

About St Andrew's

St. Andrews is one of London's finest Victorian churches, containing some of the finest sculpture and craftsmanship of the nineteenth century. It was originally built in the heart of the West End, but was demolished stone by stone - each piece carefully transported the ten miles to southern Kingsbury which urgently needed a bigger church. Home and Abroad will support the church's Rekindling programme.
